Happy August Bank Holiday people! We hope you’re doing something nice and that the weather plays ball. Pretty much all of us Singletrack Staffers are off to various far flung places to ride mountain bikes. Scotland, the Malverns, Northumbria, Whistler, West Yorkshire… it’s all good.

For the first time in far-too-long I [Benji] am off to do a race. An enduro race. The Naughty Northumbrian to be precise. It’s a biggie. Quite a bit bigger biggie than I initially realised to be honest! I haven’t ridden a 100km+ 3000m+ weekend since… er, ever. So that’s nice. The tracks do look amazing, let’s hope I have the stamina to get round it all! Any excuse to get out of fixing the decking.

Before I head off to load up on pop ‘n’ crisps, here is this week’s Fresh Goods Friday…

A no-wires dropper post to rival the RockShox Reverb AXS. This is the third incarnation of a wireless dropper from Magura. The Vyron MDS V.3 dispenses with a rechargeable battery, instead there’s a CR2 lithium battery with a sealed battery cover. The neat remote has a CR2032 battery. General speed of response and the drop/raise have been improved apparently. Waterproof to IP-67 rating (“dust and brief immersion in water”).

The latest version of the popular Vans Lock-On grip. An updated design of the classic Vans waffle sole. ODI’s proprietary Soft Compound TPE material. New v2.1 single clamp lock-on. Six colours with special edition etched clamps with similarly iconic checkerboard motif. The gum brown colour is obviously The One To Have.

Tyre inserts for less grrr-avity riding. Impressively light (50g) insert for XC and trail riders. Designed for rims from 25mm to 30mm internal widths. “Enhances suspension and with the ability for run-flat riding in the event of a puncture. Air-Liner Light is the lightest and fastest insert for tubeless mtb tyres available in the market. In case of a tyre puncture and consequent air loss, Air-Liner Light expands, offering excellent support to the tyre. The foam is made of open cells which can retain their own air pressure and releases the air held within the foam cells once the tyre starts to lose air. By doing so, Air-Liner Light expands in size and offers increased support to the wheel-tyre system, allowing run-flat riding.”

The all-new Grail MIPS hat from Troy Lee. Troy Lee Designs’ first ever helmet without a visor donchaknow. Designed for XC or gravel riding. Reminiscent of the overtrousers from a few years back but with a few more features to them. 10K / 10K waterproof and breathability. PFC-free DWR coating to repel water. Reflective print in key movement areas. Secure zipped leg pocket.Off set fly for comfort. Adjustable waist. Tapered leg with elasticated opening. Packs away into its own pocket. Relaxed fit (the main pic has the YT trousers underneath them).

Kevlar mix fabric across knuckles. Amara palm. Adjustable cuff. Silicone print on brake fingers. Minimal padding on palm.

We don’t know much about this change/kit bag/mat thing. Benji will be taking it to this weekend’s Naughty Northumbrian enduro to give a try. Altura: “Our all new Ridge Dirt Kit bag, a waterproof kit bag which doubles up as a changing mat for after a wet and muddy ride.”

Charlie says: “Chris Boardman tells us ‘Lee Craigie is an eloquent wordsmith, an explorer, a different type of athlete and an avid observer of life. But what brings it all together is her ability to tell a story, to draw you in, in a way, that encourages you to see and experience things anew. Lee Craigie makes you feel good about life’. And he is right. Though I have not yet read the book, but I know Lee and can confirm her perspective and happy whilst determined style is rather infectious. The book takes you from her XC racing days through to serious bikepacking trips. This will be £15 very well spent.”

Charlie says: “I wish I had this with me last weekend while exploring Wales. We got lucky and found camping and a nice little sandy cove at Mwnt. The cliffs on each side funnel and swell into the beach making the surf significantly bigger than it should be. Plus, you get sideways waves refracting off the cliffs. It made for a crazy peaky and rather heavy body surfing session. Got tubed. Got nailed. However, the book would have advised us of the seasonal dog ban… which screwed things up for Oscar the dog.

“This book is such an asset to have with 350+ pages, around 500 beaches, solid information, and awesome pictures. The next trip is already being planned with this book and a glass of wine. The next beach adventure is going to be more targeted and less luck.”

If that tyre insert is open cell foam, does it not soak up a lot of sealant?

Makes no sense to me, maybe something lost in translation?

From the Vittoria website: “The foam is made of open cells . . . and it is covered with a tough waterproof skin which prevents cuts and any absorption of sealant”.

Hmm, sounds like BS to me then.

Is this enough for day to day mtb use? My bikes have been in enough streams and ‘immersive’ rain that I wonder.

IP-67 –

First digit: 6 – Dust Tight

Second digit: 7 – Protection against immersion (up to 1 metre for 30 minutes)

Which is one up from “Protection against heavy seas, or powerful jets of water” and one less than “Protection against complete, continuous submersion in water”

Why would there be? Northumberland is in Northumbria so if they’re going to Northumberland they must also be going to Northumbria – unless they started there obviously.

That seems a very odd decision – so now both shifter and post use single use batteries that will frequently end up in landfill. Neither of those sizes are (AFAIK) available in NiMh or Li-ion rechargeable versions either.

Seems a step backward and would put me off owning (CR2’s aren’t something you’d find in a corner shop or up a mountain either)
